Kids and Contact Lenses - Is it Safe?

With technology, medical and cosmetic advances in contact lenses, more parents are switching their children's glasses to contact lenses. One of the most frequent questions asked by parents is, "Is my child old enough to wear contact lenses?" According to Dr. Kimberly Friedman of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians, there is no one answer - it really does depend on the child, "Physically, the eyes are ready for contacts from infancy on up. What it has to do with is more the maturity and responsibility level of that individual child."

How to know if your child is ready...

Is your child mature enough?
Look at your child's glasses? Are the frames in good condition? Are the lenses always dirty or scratched?
Is your child responsible? Do they take out the trash when asked, care for the dog, or complete school assignments on time?
Does your child need constant reminders to do everyday chores?
What are some risks?

Infections
Allergic reactions
Eye dryness, redness or irritation
Corneal ulcers
However, by following the prescribed care regimen and maintaining good follow-up and communication with your eye care provider, complications are rare.

Finally, if you choose contact lenses for your child, here are some safety tips to remember.

Never let your child sleep in lenses.
Make sure your child follows the guidelines set forth by your eye care professional. This includes making sure your child only wears his or her lenses for the scheduled time.
Remember to visit your optometric physician if your child exhibits any unusual signs of discomfort, redness, itchiness, etc.
Contact lenses are designed to fit each individual, no matter what age, so fitting your child should be no more difficult than fitting an adult.
Remember, trust your eye care provider. They can help you make an informed decision as to whether contacts are right for your child.
