This course provides an overview and insight into several ocular conditions with a focus on oral systemic medications and their use in managing these conditions. Infectious, allergic, and inflammatory disorders, as well as age-related macular degeneration, will be discussed.

It can be difficult to know when to refer a patient to a specialist, outpatient work-up, or to the emergency department. This case-based course lets the participants determine what they would do in each situation.

This case-based lecture highlights visual and ocular signs and symptoms which lead to the diagnosis of heart-related abnormalities. Optometrists have the skill set to suspect and recognize potential cardiac and vascular issues if they take the time to listen to their patients, routinely monitor blood pressure and pulse, and carefully assess visual function and ocular health. Timely referral to the emergency department and/or cardiology can save vision, prevent stroke, and ultimately save a life.

This case-based lecture highlights visual and ocular signs and symptoms which lead to the diagnosis of lung-related abnormalities. Optometrists have the skill set to suspect and recognize potential pulmonary issues if they take the time to listen to their patients, ask pertinent questions, and carefully assess visual function and ocular health. Accurate and timely referral to pulmonology or other appropriate specialists can save vision and prevent systemic complications.

 


Meet the Speakers

Brian R. Hall, OD, FAAO
Dr. Hall earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York College of Optometry and completed his residency at the Veterans Affairs Hudson Valley Health Care System. Currently practicing at Atlantic Eye, he specializes in ocular and neuro-ophthalmic diseases, as well as comprehensive and emergency eye care. His career accomplishments include serving as a residency program director, adjunct clinical professor at SUNY, and being named the 2011 Doctor of the Year at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, part of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. Dr. Hall also volunteered as a medical missionary at Hospital de la Familia in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Hall is a sought-after speaker, delivering lectures locally, nationally, and internationally on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular diseases.

Kelly Malloy, OD, FAAO, Dipl.
Dr. Malloy graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1996 and completed a residency in Primary Care at The Eye Institute. After practicing primary care at The Eye Institute for several years, she completed fellowship training in neuro-ophthalmic disease in 2005. Dr. Kelly Malloy is the Chief of the Neuro-Ophthalmic Disease Specialty Clinical Service at The Eye Institute and Co-Director of the Neuro-Ophthalmic Disease residency program at Salus at Drexel University. She has also achieved Diplomate status in this specialty at the American Academy of Optometry.
