Glaucoma affects 3 million Americans and according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation only half know it. NJSOP member Dr. Larry Wallis discusses “All Eyes on the Family” a joint program funded by the Lions Club International Foundation and Allergan.
According to Dr. Wallis, “Most of the time there are no symptoms.” Glaucoma is a disease characterized by damage to the optic nerve. Rising pressure on the nerve prevents normal fluid made in the eye from escaping. Dr. Wallis, “Pressure on the nerve cuts off circulation… damages the support structures… and the nerve slowly dies.” This damage results in a slow onset of blindness.
