With summer approaching, many people visit the tanning salon to prepare for their summer fun. While tanning can be safe, there are dangers. Dr. Laura Perrin of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians discusses the dangers and precautions we should all take on CN8’s “Your Morning.”
Without proper protection, our eyes are susceptible to burns and even cancer. According to Dr. Perrin, “Don’t be afraid of the goggles when you’re in the tanning booth.” Our eyelids are one of the thinnest parts of the skin and UV rays can penetrate the lid and reach the eye. “Just closing the eyes — using cotton balls is not enough.”
To tan safely...
- Wear UV blocking goggles
- If you borrow the goggles, make sure they are disinfected
- Visit a reputable salon with FDA regulated equipment
- Never tan twice a day
- Ask your physician or pharmacist about medications and light sensitivity
- Consider instant tanning creams or sprays
Just as you want to protect your skin, you want to protect your eyes too.
